How often do you want to just get to the finish line without going through the process necessary for achievement? My children’s journey with Martial Arts reminds me of my when I received my Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do, and how the process was just as important as receiving the belt itself. It was the journey that made the Black Belt ceremony so special. Let me tell you a bit about my journey.
Two weeks before I was supposed to test for my Black Belt, I tore my calf sparring. I drove a stick shift at the time, which was incredibly painful since I had to use my bad leg to depress the clutch to shift gears. Although I felt discouraged by the injury, I had invested so much time in my journey that there was no question I would get healthy and come back to take the Black Belt test.
Needless to say, this was a challenging time for me personally. Additional challenges I faced were: 1) I had a new baby that was just born 2) I had just moved into a brand new home 1 hour and 15 minutes from the Tae Kwon Do studio and 3) I had just started my brand new business 1 month before 9-11…….
You have to be tested by a belt higher than oneself to be promoted. During my training, my main instructor was Grand Master Lee, a 9th degree Black Belt who barely spoke English. He was so highly ranked (9th degree) that he had to travel back to Korea to be tested. Black Belt tests in his school in Olney, Maryland were not frequent events so I had to wait 6 long months to test. But I did it.
One needs to find experts like my Grand Master Lee to teach the basics. As this video shows, in my world of technology, it is the basics of Assessment of Infrastructure, DR, and Security that are critical to the path to success with the big project or the BIG move to Cloud!
